Rodez is the capital of the Aveyron department in the south of France. The city's history goes back over two thousand years which is reflected by the attractive, historical center which is largely a pedestrian zone. Three times a week there's a farmer's market: on Wednesdays, Friday nights and the largest on Saturdays.
The city has approximately 25,000 inhabitants.
Rodez is located in the south of France, on a hill along the Aveyron River. The hilly surroundings are the southern part of the Massif Central. The city lies roughly in the middle of the triangle formed by the cities Toulouse, Clermont-Ferrand and Montpellier.
From the old days, Rodez is a trade center of agricultural produce (dairy and meat) from the surroundings, but nowadays the economy is much more diverse. It's a center of healthcare, education and research. The German Bosch has a factory here and wooden furniture is also made in Rodez. Tourism has grown significantly in recent years.
Rodez-Marcillac Airport (in French: Aeroport de Rodez-Marcillac) is situated over 10 kilometers northwest of town. It's easily reachable by rental car. From the center you first take the Avenue de Bordeaux (D994) and then the D840 which runs along the airport. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.
The city's public transport has improved significantly in recent years. This was done to reduce car traffic in the center. The lines of the so-called Octobus not only run through the city, but also to villages in the vicinity. Rodez also has a train station with connections to for example Paris and Toulouse.
As said above, Rodez wants to reduce car traffic in the center, which is now largely a pedestrian zone. There are, however, several parking lots and garages around the old city where you can park your rental car. These parking facilities are clearly signposted. Rodez is situated along the N88 (to Toulouse), but there are no other large freeways around the city. A rental car is an ideal means of transportation to discover the rest of the Aveyron Department.
Rodez has a reasonable choice of accommodations, but the number of truly luxurious hotels is few and far between. Most hotels and guesthouses fall in the budget and midrange category. In the surroundings you'll find some castles which have (partially) been converted into hotels (château-hotel) and there are also some campsites near Rodez.
