Malta is the largest island of the Maltese archipelago, which also consists of Gozo and the uninhabited Comino. Malta is full of history, but also offers sun, sea, beaches and excellent diving spots. The capital Valetta alone has more than 300 monuments and there are many other remnants of our forefathers on Malta, including the underground tomb (hypogeum) Hal Saflieni and the megalithic temples. Add to this the crystal clear waters of the sea and exciting nightlife of the tourist places and it will be clear that Malta offers something for everyone.
On the two islands Malta and Gozo live about 400,000 people. The largest city is not Valletta, but Birkirka. Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in the world.
The archipelago is located in the Mediterranean, more than ninety kilometers south of the Italian island of Sicily. The landscape is hilly and the highest point is the Ta’ Dmejrek (253m).
Malta has become a financial center, with many offices of offshore banks. There are several online gambling companies located on Malta. Furthermore, there are limestone mines in the archipelago and in Malta they manufacture electronics and clothing. Tourism is very important: the archipelago is visited by more than a million people annually. Recently, the country is trying to promote so-called medical tourism (people who are treated in Malta, because this treatment is much more expensive in their own country or because they are on a long waiting list).
The international airport is located eight kilometers south of the capital Valetta, near the town of Luqa. The airport is often referred to as Luqa Airport. Malta International Airport is easily accessible by rental car. From the city first follow the road to Marsa. After that, the route is clearly indicated on road signs.
Malta has good public transport. Buses to several sights depart almost without exception from Valletta. This means that there are no bus services between the attractions, but you will have to return to the city first. To circumvent this problem, you might consider renting a car.
In recent years, the roads on Malta have improved a lot and a rental car is an ideal means of transport to visit the many attractions and beautiful beaches. Alongside a double yellow line it is not permitted to park. Alongside a single yellow line it is not allowed to park during certain hours (usually indicated on signs); you can stop here briefly. In so-called ‘Time Parking Zones’ you are only allowed to park for a specified period of time, in most cases not more than one hour.
Malta has no shortage of hotels and accommodations. From cheap dorms for backpackers to five star hotels. In recent years, more hotels have been built in the more expensive categories. Tourists that can afford such a hotel room spend more money, thus argues Malta. In summer it is advisable to book your room well in advance.
