Hanover is the capital city of the German federal state Lower Saxony. During World War II, the city was largely destroyed. After the war a part of the inner city was rebuilt, but Hanover also presents itself with modern architecture. Hannover-Langenhagen Airport lies 11 kilometers north of the city center. The airport is easily reachable with a car: The airport lies next to the A352, the link between highways A7 (Hamburg-Kassel) and A2 (Berlin-Dortmund). The route to the airport is clearly signposted.
Hanover has a good public transportation system consisting of a fine network of bus lines, trams and city trains (S-Bahn). The Hanover Card is handy for tourists: with this you receive free access to public transportation and discount on entrance fees and attractions. The card can be purchased with a validity of 1 or 3 days. There are also group tickets (for 2-5 people).
Hanover is a very busy city and a large part of the main shopping center (where there are many nice terraces) is car free. In the rest of the city you can drive around comfortably. To find a parking space can be difficult, especially during international fairs and conferences. A vehicle must have a special sticker to enter the Umweltzone (the city center).
