Saarbrücken is called like this for a reason; the city is mainly famous for its historical bridges across the Saar River. The best-known one is the stone bridge from the sixteenth century. The old center lies around the St. Johanner Markt, including a beautiful Gothic church and the Saarbrücker Schloss.
The city has approximately 180,000 inhabitants.

Saarbrücken used to be an industrial center, thanks to the coal-mines nearby. The industry has largely disappeared. Nowadays, the city is mainly an educational center, with for example a university, the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft. There's also a lot of research done. The famous Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik is located in Saarbrücken. Tourism also plays an important role in local economy.
Saarbrücken Airport is situated 15 kilometers east of the city center. It's easily reachable by rental car via the A620 and L108. Saarbrücken and Saarland have excellent and integrated public transport. You can use one ticket for the buses, streetcars and trains, at least within the region of SaarVV. The so-called Saarbahn crosses the border, to the French town of Sarreguemines. The high-speed train LGV also stops in Saarbrücken to continue to the French capital Paris.
You have to pay for street parking in Saarbrücken's center. There are also many parking lots and garages; the locations are signposted. The number of available places in parking garages is also indicated. If you don't want to drive in Saarbrücken's center, you can also park in Dudweiler, just north of town, in the Tiefgarage am Markt, an underground parking.
