There are many thermal spas in the Italian region of Tuscany. The town Montecatini Terme was built around thermal spas, which are said to have a healing effect particularly for people with stomach and liver problems. The oldest and most famous spa in town is the Tettuccio Terme on the main street from the nineteenth century. Montecatini is an attractive town, where the grandeur of the old days is the norm.
The town has over 20,000 inhabitants.
Montecatini Terme is located in the province of Pistoia in the northern part of Tuscany. The town lies directly along the freeway from Pisa to Florence in the valley of the Nievole River which flows through the so-called Plain of Lucca (Piana di Lucca).
In Montecatini Terme it's all about thermal spas. The town has developed into one of the most popular health resorts of Italy and even Europe. Not only people with health problems visit the town; Montecatini is also a nice destination for those who want to enjoy the grandeur of the picturesque old part of town (Montecatini Alto). It's also a popular conference town.
There are two airports near Montecatini Terme: Peretola Airport near Florence (officially: Aeroporto di Firenze ‘Amerigo Vespucci’) and Pisa International Airport ‘Galileo Galilei’. Pisa Airport is situated 42 kilometers to the west and Florence Airport 46 kilometers to the east. Both airports are easily reachable by rental car via freeway A11 which runs right along Montecatini.
Montecatini has good public transport, with for example connections to Florence, Lucca and the capital of the province Pistoia. The town also lies along the railroad line Pisa-Florence: during daytime trains stop every 30 minutes. There's a cable railway with antique trains from the nineteenth century between Montecatini Terme and the old city part Alto.
The park with thermal spas (Parce di Terme) and surroundings are a pedestrian zone. Parking nearby is expensive, but there are parking lots on the verge of town where you can park your rental car for less and take a shuttle bus to the center.
There's a large choice of accommodations around the Parce di Terme, but hotel rooms are in great demand. We therefore advise booking your accommodation well in advance. In recent years, some new hotels have been built, further from the park, but here you'll miss the grandeur of Montecatini Terme. There are some basic guesthouses in the old part of the city city, Montecatini Alto, for budget travelers.
