Introduction

Luxembourg City is an old fortress, it once was one of Europe's strongest fortresses. This ended in 1867, when Luxembourg demolished most of its walls in exchange for a neutral status. The remaining casemates and the rest of the historic city are on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994. These casemates (underground passages) are one of Luxembourg's main attractions. Furthermore there is the beautiful Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Luxembourg, an impressive arch bridge (the Pont Adolphe) over the Pétrusse, and you can enjoy modern art at the Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean. In the pedestrian zone in the center you will find elegant (and expensive) shops and excellent restaurants.

Luxembourg City has a population of 90,000 people.

Location

The capital of Luxembourg is located in the south of the country. The city began as a fortress on a plateau which is surrounded by a deep gorge on three sides. An ideal location for a fortified city. These deep gorges of the rivers Alzette and Pétrusse are now spanned by bridges and viaducts.

Economy

Luxembourg is one of the richest cities in the world. It is a financial and administrative center. There are many banks and some important departments of the European Union, including the European Court of Justice and the European Investment Bank. Industrial production comprises of steel (but this is much less important than fifty years ago) and chemistry. Furthermore, several large internet companies have their international or European headquarters there, including Skype and eBay.

Airports

The capital's airport, Findel Airport, is located six kilometers from the center. It is easily accessible by rental car: from the ring around Luxembourg City take exit 7. The airport is also accessible from the A1 (Luxembourg-Trier), exit 9.

Public Transport

The city has an efficient network of public buses. All lines have their starting point at the central bus station Hamilius. At night there is a "bus on demand". You can order this so-called Nightrider – just like a taxi – by phone.

Traffic and Parking

Driving around in Luxembourg City is easy. However, there are many one-way streets, but the city is not very big, so you won't get lost easily. Finding a parking space can be difficult. There are several parking garages around the center (for instance at the bus station, at the Place de la Constitution and at the Place du Théatre), but these are quite expensive. You can park cheaper in the south of the city, around the Gare Centrale. Or go for one of the P+R facilities just outside the town and continue by public transport. On weekends and holidays you can park your rental car for free on the parking Glacis, one and a half kilometers northwest of the center.

Hotels

Luxembourg has a wide range of hotels. The hotels in the center are expensive, cheaper alternatives are found mainly in the southern part of the town. Furthermore, there is a large campsite, about five kilometers southwest of the center. Luxembourg is a popular city trip destination and there are many EU-based institutions. This means that hotels are often fully booked. We therefore recommend you to book your hotel well in advance.
