Location information for Johor Bahru

Introduction

Johor Bahru is an industrial city in the south of Malaysia. It's mainly attractive to inhabitants from Singapore who come shopping here as many goods are cheaper in Malaysia. The Istana Bakar is interesting for tourists; it's a nineteenth century royal palace, where the sultan's treasures are exhibited.

Population

The city itself has almost one million inhabitants, but including the suburbs twice as many people live in and around Johor Bahru.

Location

Johor Bahru is located in the far south of Malaysia, on a small strait (Straits of Tebrau or Straits of Johor) which forms the border with Singapore. The city lies in a watery area with many rivers, creeks and swampland.

Economy

Johor Bahru is one of the country's largest industrial areas. Heavy industry is located east of the city, including petrochemical companies and shipyards. Lighter industry (mainly electronics factories) is concentrated north of town. Many inhabitants of Johor Bahru work in Singapore and inhabitants of that city visit Johor Bahru because prices are often lower here.

Airports

The airport of Johor Bahru, Senai International Airport (also Sultan Ismail International Airport), is situated over 30 kilometers northwest of the city center. It's reachable by rental car via Jalan Skudai.

Public Transport

Public transport in Johor Bahru leaves much to be desired. There are buses, but the network is limited. Taxis are an alternative, but make sure the driver turns on the meter.

Traffic and Parking

Traffic in Johor Bahru is extremely busy. The infrastructure hasn't kept up with the growth of car traffic in the city, often causing traffic jams. Finding a free parking place in the street is also difficult. Metro Parking, on the north side of City Square, is often full. You may then be able to park your rental car at the lot near Landmark Hall, or at the adjoining church.

Hotels

Johor Bahru has a large choice of accommodations. The city center houses many business hotels, while there's a good choice of cheaper accommodations just outside the center. There's a cluster of hotels along Jalan Meldrum on the south side of City Square.
