Tilburg presents itself as a modern industrial city. The center is a mixture of old and new architecture.
The city has about 200,000 inhabitants, which makes it the 6th largest city of the Netherlands (after Eindhoven and before Groningen). During carnival, the city puts on its party hat.
Tilburg is located in the south of Netherlands, in the middle of the province of Noord-Brabant, and not far from the Belgian border. It is located at 120 kilometers from Amsterdam, 80 kilometers from Rotterdam and 40 kilometers from Eindhoven.
Tilburg's wealth is built on the textile industry. After the demise of that industry, the city has had a hard time trying to keep its head above water. Nowadays, the chemical and food industries play a major role. There are also transport companies. In addition, the city has developed as an educational center. In 1986, the Catholic polytechnic became a university. There are also various other higher learning institutes. The city attracts many visitors with the annual multicultural Festival Mundial and the annual Fair (the biggest of its kind in the Netherlands).
The nearest airport is Eindhoven Airport, which processes flights to a few European capitals and holiday destinations, mostly by budget airlines. It Is located some 25 kilometers to the east of the city.
Tilburg has a sophisticated public bus network. The eight lines operated by the BBA all stop at the city's Central Station. The company also operates bus services to other cities in the area, like Eindhoven and Breda.
The city is located on the A58 motorway Vlissingen-Breda-Eindhoven. There are plans to extend various motorways to Tilburg, for instance the A27 from Utrecht. At the moment work is underway on the construction of a ring road, which is scheduled to be finished in 2010. This will reduce traffic through Tilburg. At present, there is often a lot of traffic in the city.
Tilburg has six guarded car parks, which are clearly indicated via road signs towards the center. The signs also indicate whether and how many spaces are available. It is possible to park in the street, although it can be more expensive than parking in a car park. NB: Black parking meters are to be used only by residents and their visitors. It is only possible to pay for an entire day there.
The city has a reasonable number of hotels. There are also some very good hotels in the wider area, for instance in Kaatsheuvel near the 'Efteling' theme park. Keep in mind that hotels may be fully booked during major events (the Tilburg Fair, Festival Mundial). To avoid being disappointed, we recommend you book in advance.
