Introduction

Bardufoss is a small town in the rough area of fjords in the north of Norway. It's situated within vast pine forests, transected by the winding Målselva River, and near the Dividalen National Park. The Polar Zoo, the world's northernmost zoo, is one of Bardufoss' attractions.

The town has less than 3,000 inhabitants.

Location

Bardufoss is located in the north of Norway in the valley of the Målselva River, where it meets the Barduelva. The town is situated over 80 kilometers north of Narvik and about 70 kilometers south of Tromsø. Bardufoss is one of the centers within the municipality of Bardu in the province of Troms.

Economy

The airport isn't used only for civil flights; it's a large military basis as well. The Norwegian army is the largest employer of Bardufoss. The town also benefits from increasing tourism to this part of Norway.

Airports

Bardufoss Airport lies directly next to the town along freeway E6. It's therefore easily reachable by rental car. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted. The airport only processes flights to and from the Norwegian capital.

Public Transport

There's an extensive system of regional buses in this part of Norway. Buses call at all places at least once a day (but usually more often). There are connections with for example Tromsø, Narvik, Harstad, Storslett and Alta.

Traffic and Parking

A rental car is an ideal means of transportation in and around Bardufoss. The main roads are excellent. Local roads are also well maintained, but can be winding and sometimes somewhat narrow. In winter months special tires are compulsory. Don't drive without these tires, even if you don't expect snow or ice. Rental cars are by the way equipped with these tires, during months when it's compulsory.

Hotels

Accommodation in Bardufoss itself is very limited, but there are several possibilities to spend the night in the surrounding area. There are hotels, ranging from basic guesthouses to four-star hotels. The most popular type of accommodations are the so-called Rorbuer, basic log cabins. There are also several campsites accommodating RVs and tents, but often they also offer ready-made cabins.
