Introduction

Doha is the capital of Qatar, the Gulf State that will organize the FIFA World Cup in 2022. Most soccer matches will be held in or around the capital. Doha is an ultramodern city with shining skyscrapers and numerous shopping centers. Even the old Souq Waqif was demolished to replace it by a new souq (market) in a fake 'old style'.

Population

Over 1 million people live in Doha, about three-quarters of Qatar's total population. A large part (over half) of the population consists of migrants, mainly from Asian countries, who do the work while the Qataris enjoy the results of that labor.

Location

Doha is located on the east coast of Qatar, a peninsula which stretches out into the Persian Gulf. In the south, Qatar borders with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Economy

As in many other Gulf States, Qatar's economy is based on income from petrol and gas extraction. Like Dubai, Doha more and more focuses on foreign visitors. Many new hotels and shopping centers are being built. In recent years, the construction industry has therefore become one of the pillars of economy; this is enhanced by the construction of stadiums and other facilities for the World Cup.

Airports

Doha International Airport is situated about 4 kilometers southeast of the city center. It's easily reachable by rental car via the Al Matar Street or the Ras Abu Abboud Street. The way to the airport is clearly signposted on both roads. East of the current airport, a large, new airport is being built.

Public Transport

A public transport system was only introduced in Doha in 2005. At first it only consisted of two lines, but nowadays there's an extensive network to all parts of the city. Buses are mainly used by migrants (and tourists); Qataris prefer their own car.

Traffic and Parking

The large growth of Doha in recent years has resulted into an enormous amount of traffic. New freeways can barely keep up with the growing car traffic. There are plenty of parking facilities, for example near the largest shopping centers. Here you can safely park your rental car.

Hotels

Doha has a large choice of accommodations. Bear in mind that it's an expensive city which is reflected by the accommodations: most hotels fall in the higher category and there are several five-star hotels. It's hard to find budget accommodations in Qatar's capital.
