Following the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, the Romanian city of Timişoara is attracting more and more tourists. In 1989, this pleasant university city was the scene of mass demonstrations, which later spread to the capital Bucharest and led to the Romanian Revolution, which made dictator Ceauşescu having to step down.
The city has approximately 325,000 inhabitants.
Timişoara is located in the west of Romania, not far from the borders with Hungary and Serbia and in a straight line over 400 kilometers northwest of the capital Bucharest. The city's surroundings are fertile agricultural land.
In communist times, the city was a center of textile and food industry. This latter industry still plays a role, but new economic sectors have also been introduced in Timişoara: electrotechnics, engineering, manufacturers of car parts and the IT sector. The new companies are mainly a result of foreign investments, especially from Germany and the United States.
Timişoara Airport is officially called Traian Vuia International Airport. It's situated 10 kilometers northeast of town and is reachable by rental car via the E70 (DN6). The exit to the airport (Strada Aeroport) is clearly signposted.
Timişoara has good public transport, consisting of 20 bus lines, 8 trolley bus lines and 10 streetcar lines. On some routes, express buses run to the suburbs. There are also good train connections with for example Bucharest and the Serbian capital Belgrade.
Where once the city walls stood, now lies Timişoara's inner beltway. The wide boulevards date from the communist times, but they received post-communist names, like the Bulevard Revoluției din 1989. The city center has an orderly, square street pattern. It's therefore not difficult to find your way around. You can park your rental car in one of the parking garages around the center. Many hotels in Timişoara also offer parking facilities for their guests.
Just after the revolution of 1989, Timişoara only had 6 hotels; 5 years later there were almost 30 and nowadays there are about 60 hotel accommodations. This shows how much the economy has improved and tourism has grown. The choice is varied ranging from dormitories for backpackers to four-star hotels. The historical hotel Timişoara is worth a visit, if only for a cup of coffee in the old-style restaurant.
