Adeje is a city on Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. Playa de las Américas was purpose-built for tourists, but Adeje has some historical places of interest, like the fortified Casa Fuerte and the Iglesia de Santa Ursula. Tourists, however, mainly visit Adeje because it's the starting point of the hike to Tenerife's deepest ravine, the Barranco del Infierno. There's also a spectacular water park, Siam Park.
The city has 43,000 inhabitants.
Adeje is located in the southwest of Tenerife, just north of Playa de las Américas. The city lies at the end of freeway TF-1 (also Autopista del Sur) which runs to the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Agriculture used to be the main pillar of local economy, but that role was taken over by tourism. Nearby the city you'll find beautiful beaches on the Costa Adeje.
The largest and busiest airport of Tenerife, Reina Sofia Airport (also Tenerife South Airport) is situated 15 kilometers southeast of Adeje. It's easily reachable by rental car via freeway TF-1.
The green buses of Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife S.A. (TITSA) call at every town on Tenerife. The buses are modern and air-conditioned and the fares are low. There are many stops though and the ride can therefore take long. There's an express bus connection between Playa de las Américas in the south and the capital in the north.
Especially in high season it may be difficult to find a free parking place in Adeje or other tourist centers on Tenerife. The locals don't make a fuss about it and double-park without batting an eyelid, but we advise against this with your rental car. Also bear in mind that the roads in the mountains are quite narrow, steep and winding.
There's no shortage of accommodation in and around Adeje. The accommodations mainly consist of apartment buildings and holiday hotels and resorts on the beach, the Costa Adeje. The hotels here are slightly more expensive than the accommodations in the nearby, but 'more common', Playa de las Américas.
