Introduction

Formentera is the smallest island of the Balearic Islands. Until recently it was only reachable by boat from Ibiza, but nowadays there are ferry connections with the Spanish mainland. Formentera has beautiful sand beaches and on most beaches nude bathing is allowed.

Divers and snorkelers can discover the underwater world of Formentera. The island is also a beloved destination for windsurfers and sailors.

Population

The island has only 9,000 inhabitants. In the summer months July and August, the inhabitants are outnumbered by far because of the vacationers. Especially Italians like to come to Formentera.

Location

Formentera lies 7 kilometers south of Ibiza. The island is only 19 kilometers long. The highest point of the island is the east coast near La Mola, where the steep rocks arise from the sea up to a height of 192 meters.

Economy

Tourism is the pillar of the local economy. Besides that some inhabitants live of the fishing industry and grapes and citrus fruits are cultivated.

Airports

Formentera does not have an airport and is only reachable by ferry.

Public transport

In the summer months there is a scheduled bus service (every half hour) from the ferry harbor to several destinations on the island. Attention: check if your bus drives to your destination, since not all buses stop at the same stops.

The crossing by ferry from or to Ibiza takes a good half hour (high speed ferry) up to one hour (car ferry).

Traffic and parking

Driving around in your rental car in Formentera is not a problem at all. Besides the main roads there are many scenic country roads and on the way you will see old windmills and watchtowers. The sea is never far away on this island and with a rental car you can search for a small beach all to yourself.

Hotels

Formentera has a large offer of accommodations. There are luxurious hotels, but also apartments, villas and cottages. Even in the smaller towns you will never have a problem to find a room, although this would most probably be in a basic guesthouse.
