Car hire Torremolinos

Introduction

Like many other seaside resorts, Torremolinos used to be a fishing village. Not much is reminding of those days; nowadays it's all about sun, sea and beach worshippers. The best-known shopping street is Calle San Miguel which runs from the center down to the beach.

Population

Torremolinos' permanent population consists of approximately 45,000 people, but in summer months that number is far exceeded.

Location

Torremolinos is located in Andalusia in the south of Spain on the Costa del Sol. Málaga lies east of the seaside resort.

Economy

Following a period of decay in the eighties of the previous century, Torremolinos is now again an attractive holiday destination for both Spanish and other European tourists. Besides the tourists who vacation here, there are also many Northern Europeans, mainly British and Dutch, who live here permanently or who winter here.

Airports

Málaga Airport is situated halfway that city and Torremolinos. Málaga Airport is easily reachable by rental car from the center via the N-340; the distance is 8 kilometers.

Public Transport

Torremolinos has good public bus transport, both within the city and to other places on the Costa del Sol. The latter buses leave from the bus station (Terminal Autobus) on the Calle Hoyo. There are also train connections with for example Málaga and Fuengirola.

Traffic and Parking

In summer months it's extremely busy in and around Torremolinos and difficult to find a parking place for your rental car. The locals have no qualms about double-parking, but as a tourist it's better not to do so. Torremolinos has several parking garages, including two underground ones: underneath Plaza Andalucía and near Montemar, along the road to Benalmadena.

Hotels

As already mentioned under Economy, at the end of the eighties, Torremolinos had the doubtful reputation of being the drain of the Costa del Sol. There were cheap, poor hotels which attracted a similar clientele. In the last ten years, a lot has been done to improve the accommodations and build new hotels. The city now has a large choice of good tourist hotels and resorts, but also guesthouses and apartments. If you want to stay here during high season, however, we advise booking your hotel room well in advance.
