Vigo (pronounced: Bigo) is the largest city of the autonomous region Galicia in the northwest of Spain. Vigo is a cozy city, but especially the surroundings are inviting to visit with a rental car: quiet villages, streams, beautiful nature and natural beaches. Particularly southwest of the city are beautiful beaches: big and fairly busy, but also intimate little beaches on small bays.
Off the coast lie three islands collectively called Islas Cíes, or the Islands of the Gods. It is a bird's paradise, where lovely hiking trails are set out. The boat services to these islands sail only in summer.
Vigo has about 300,000 inhabitants, but in the entire city area and surroundings almost half a million people live.
The city lies in the southwest of the region Galicia northeastern Spain, right on the Atlantic Ocean. Vigo has a fairly sheltered location, making it drier than the rest of Northwest Spain.
A large factory of Citroën-Peugeot is located in Vigo. The port is also important: it is the largest fishing port in the world, where one of the largest fish producers (Pescanova) is based. Furthermore, in the port of Vigo is a trans-shipment of containers and a part is reserved for pleasure cruising.
Vigo-Peinador International Airport is located about 10 kilometers east of the city. The airport is easily reachable by rental car: it lies right next to the AP-9 (exit 157). The route to the airport is clearly indicated. You will be at the airport in 10 minutes from the center of Vigo.
The city has good public transportation: there are no less than 43 bus lines connecting all parts of Vigo. The buses run from 6 am to about 11 pm.
There are also ferry connections to Cangas and Moaña, and in the summer months to the Cíes Islands.
Vigo is a fairly busy city and driving around in the city center is best avoided. There are various parking garages and spaces in and around the center. You can comfortably park your car to explore the rest of the city on foot.
In order to explore the beautiful surroundings, a rental car is essential, because the most beautiful nature and prettiest villages are found in places without public transportation.
Vigo has a great supply of hotels. You will have no trouble finding accommodation, whether you are looking for a cheap guest house or a luxurious hotel. Southwest of the city are a few camp sites. If you go to Vigo during high season, it is advised to book your accommodation well in advance.
