Madrid Barajas is the largest airport of Spain and the most important on of the Spanish capital. There are two other airports in Madrid (Torrejon and Cuatro Vientos), but they are less important. It is a busy airport, which in 2004 processed over 40 million passengers. In 2006, the airport was expanded with two runways, a state-of-the-art terminal (T4) and a satellite terminal (T4S). This will allow the airport to grow to 70 million passengers a year. These new terminals are now the most important ones for intercontinental flights. Between T4 and T4S, there is an automatic train that during peak hours departs every 2 minutes. There is a shuttle bus connection to the older terminals.
The airport is located 13 kilometres to the north-east of Madrid and is easy to reach by car. There is a direct metro connection to and from the airport and there are bus connections from the various terminals. There are no hotels at the airport.
