The Swiss city of Lausanne is the gateway to the winter sports areas of the canton of Vaud. The city itself also has something to offer: a beautiful center with an impressive, Gothic cathedral, interesting museums (including the Olympic Museum) and, thanks to the large number of students, a dazzling nightlife.
The city has approximately 125,000 inhabitants, the majority speaking French.
Lausanne is located in Switzerland on the north bank of Lake Geneva (in French: Lac Léman). Across the water lies the French city Évian-les-Bains (of the famous mineral water) and northwest of Lausanne lie the Jura Mountains. The city lies over 60 kilometers northeast of Geneva.
Lausanne's economy is extremely healthy, thanks to for example the contribution of the headquarters of several multinationals. Tobacco Company Philip Morris and the packaging cooperation Tetra Laval are headquartered here and food giant Nestlé is headquartered in the nearby Vevey. The headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, also called a multinational by some, are also based here.
The nearest larger airport is Geneva International Airport, 60 kilometers southwest of Lausanne. It's easily reachable by rental car via freeway A1.
Lausanne has excellent public transport consisting of (trolley) buses and a subway. From the train station there are good connections with other places in Switzerland, including Bern and Geneva. There are also local trains, but these are mainly intended for commuters. In addition, there are boat connections with several places along Lake Geneva.
Lausanne's center is best explored by foot. Many streets in the city center are a pedestrian zone. You can park your rental car in one of the parking garages (signposted), but they are quite expensive. The P+R areas on the verge of the city, from where you can continue traveling by public transport, are a cheaper alternative.
You don't think that Olympic delegations would stay in a cheap hotel would you? Right; therefore Lausanne has a large choice of luxurious hotels, but there's also a large choice of hotels in the midrange category. Budget travelers will have a hard time finding a cheap room.
