The Argentinian Córdoba was founded in the sixteenth century and, like numerous other places in Spanish colonies, was named after Córdoba in Spain. The city has a beautiful historical center, including the so-called Jesuit Block (Manzana Jesuítica), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city has over 1.4 million inhabitants making it the second-largest Argentinian city, after the capital Buenos Aires.
Córdoba is located in Argentina's geographical center, in the middle of the Pampas. The old city center lies on the River Suquía, about 700 kilometers northwest of the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires at the foot of the Sierras Chicas.
Córdoba is the country's technology center. In the suburbs lies the space center Centro Espacial Teófilo Tabanera, where satellites are developed and the city also houses many other high-tech companies. This becomes obvious looking at the city's main employers: among others Motorola, Intel and Electronic Data Systems.
The city's airport is officially called Aeropuerto Internacional de Córdoba "Ingeniero Aeronáutico Ambrosio L.V. Taravella". That's a long name and it's therefore usually referred to as Córdoba Airport, or Pajas Blancas, after its location, 10 kilometers north of the city center. The airport is easily reachable by rental car via the Av. Monseñor Pablo Carrera which leads directly to the airport. The way to the airport is clearly signposted.
Córdoba has excellent public bus transport, but a novice always has to get used to the 'corridor' system. Buses are divided by colors which indicate their direction. There's also a line that runs in circles (transversal). Several (inter) regional destinations can be reached by bus and train from Córdoba. There are plans to construct a high-speed train connection with Buenos Aires, but if, and if so when, these plans will be implemented is unknown.
Córdoba is a busy city and you'll have to get somewhat used to the sometimes chaotic traffic in the center. Finding a free parking place in the street isn't easy, but fortunately there are several parking garages in and around the center. Electronic signs indicate in which garage places are available.
Córdoba has a large choice of accommodations. Most hotels are located in the city center, including cheaper options near the bus station. The center is busy and noisy; if you prefer peace and quiet it's better to choose one of the many holiday resorts in the vicinity. This is where locals go during hot summer months (in Argentina: December through February).
