Alicante is a dynamic city. There are a number of projects that are underway. Alicante has developed from a shabby harbor town into an attractive city. The vibrant nightlife alone makes this city well worth a visit.
Alicante has about 285,000 inhabitants, which makes it the 13th largest city in Spain.
Alicante is located in the middle of the east coast of Spain, on the Mediterranean. The "land side" of Alicante borders on a mountainous area.
Many cities on the east coast of Spain are economically dependent on tourism. This is not the case for Alicante, although tourism has become more important in recent years. The tourists are attracted by, among other things, the nightlife and the coast. In addition to tourism, the port is also important to Alicante's economy.
Alicante International Airport, originally called El Altet Airport, is the airport nearest to Alicante, at 12 kilometers to the south-west of the city. It processes domestic and European flights, both regular services and chartered flights.
If you do not have a rental car at your disposal, you can use the (minimal) public transport of Alicante. Bus number 60 drives every 40 minutes between El Altet Airport and Plaza Puerta del Mar (in the center). From Alicante, there is a good service to the Costa Blanca, including Benidorm. There is also a train connection to, among other places, Madrid.
Alicante is not a difficult place to drive. Of course, you will have to get used to it, but that will not take long. Like in many other cities, finding a place to park your car may not be easy. We recommend that you not enter the city center too far. It is best to keep your car out of the city center, and to proceed on foot, if that is possible.
Finding a hotel in Alicante usually isn't hard during the off-season. During the peak season it may be more difficult to find a place to your liking. We therefore recommend that you book in advance.
