Location information for Innsbruck
Introduction
Innsbruck is the capital city of the Austrian state Tirol. It is mainly known for its winter sports possibilities. The city has an attractive city center full of historic buildings. In 1964 and 1976 Innsbruck organized the Olympic Winter Games.
Population
The official number of inhabitants of Innsbruck is almost 120,000, but in reality 20,000 more people live in the city. This is because they distinguish someone's main residence or second residence. Students often state their parental home as their main residence and therefore are not counted, although they do live in Innsbruck.
Location
Innsbruck is situated in the valley of the river Inn, where it comes together with Wipp valley. The city is surrounded by high mountains such as Hafelekar (2334 m) on the north side and Patscherkofel (2246 m) and Serles (2718 m) on the south side. About 30 kilometers further down south lies the Brenner Pass.
Economy
Tourism is what it is all about in Innsbruck. The peak is formed by the winter months when hundreds of thousands of people come to the attractive ski runs in the surrounding areas. Besides this there is employment in the public sector: Innsbruck is Tirol's capital city.
Furthermore, Innsbruck is an important educational center, the university has 23,000 students.
Airports
The Innsbruck Kranebitten Airport is one of the most important regional airports in the Alps. The airport is situated 3 kilometers southwest of the city, directly along the highway A12. It processes 650,000 passengers per year, of which the majority are during the winter season.
Public transport
The public transport in Innsbruck mainly exists of bus lines. Be aware that some bus lines follow the same route for the most part, but can have different final destinations. The final destination is always clearly indicated both on the front and inside the bus.
A special tourist bus (TS) runs along the most important places of interest, such as Schloß Ambras, Bergisel and Alpenzoo.
Two tramlines connect Innsbruck with towns outside the city, one to the mountain village Igls and the other to the towns in the Stubaital Valley. Furthermore there is the so-called S-Bahn that runs every 30 minutes between Telfs/Pfaffenhofen, Innsbruck and Hall.
Traffic and parking
Innsbruck and surrounding areas can be perfectly explored by car, although during the winter season it can be quite busy in the city. It is best to park in one of the underground parking garages, but they are quite expensive.
Hotels
As an important tourist town, there is no lack of hotels in Innsbruck, though during the winter season it can be difficult to find a room. Therefore it is recommended to book well in advance. During the summer season one will not have any problems finding a room and the prices are lower.
