Location information for Salzburg
Introduction
Salzburg is the fourth city of Austria and the capital city of the eponymous state. The city center with its lovely buildings in baroque style is world-famous. In 1997 it was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Furthermore, Salzburg is known as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Population
The population of Salzburg has increased by about 50% over the last 50 years. The city currently has 150,000 inhabitants.
Location
Salzburg is located along the river of Salzach, on the north side of the Alps, south of the city the high Alp peaks arise and to the north lies the hilly landscape of Oberösterreich. Salzburg lies 150 kilometers east of Munich and 300 kilometers west of the Austrian capital city Vienna.
Economy
With more than four million annual visitors, tourism is one of the pillars of Salzburg's economy, but also financial services are well represented, as well as the energy supply and mining industry.
Furthermore, Salzburg is an important education center with a public university, a medical university (private) and a conservatory. Due to this broad knowledge offer, Salzburg has developed itself into a high-tech center.
Airports
The airport of Salzburg is named after the most famous inhabitant of the city, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The airport is situated well over 3 kilometers southwest of Salzburg.
Public transport
In the center of Salzburg there are both trolley buses and normal buses, there are 20 lines in total and the buses run very frequent.
For destinations further away there is a system of citytracks, the so-called S-Bahn. These leave every 30 minutes from the central station. Line S1 goes to the famous Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf.
The city has excellent train connections with Munich, Innsbruck, Zurich and Vienna, among which connects with the high-speed train ICE.
Traffic and parking
Driving around the center of Salzburg can be a frustrating matter. In addition you will miss so much of the city's places of interest. It is better to park your car in one of the parking garages. There is an electric information system that leads you to available parking spaces, this system starts on the highway near Salzburg.
To reduce car traffic, the city council stimulates the use of bicycles. At the Tourism Office there is a detailed bicycle map available with route suggestions and all the city's attractions.
Hotels
Salzburg has many hotels to offer. For a city of this size, it is quite special that there are as many as eight five-star hotels and more than 40 four-star hotels. The more traditional hotels are located in the center, the modern hotels are situated in the newer city district on the right bank of the Salzach.
