Campo Grande (literally: Large Grassland) is the capital of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sol. It's a fast growing city with a young population, thanks to the four universities. Apart from the Dom Bosco Museum (dedicated to the original population, the Indian tribes) the city has few places on interest. Campo Grande is mainly an operating base for trips to the Pantanal nature reserve, the beautifully situated town of Bonito and to Bolivia.
The city has grown substantially in recent years. In 2010 Campo Grande had almost 800,000 inhabitants.
Campo Grande is located in the Center-West region of Brazil at an altitude of almost 600 meters and is surrounded by tropical savanna. The city lies over 200 kilometers north of the border with Paraguay; Corumbá, near the border with Bolivia, lies 400 kilometers to the west. Campo Grande is nicknamed Cidade Morena ('Swarthy City'), because of the reddish-brown color of the region's soil.
Campo Grande is an administrative and educational center. The majority of the working population is employed in the service industry. Agricultural produce from the surrounding area (meat, soybeans, rice, sugarcane and cassava) are also traded or processed in the city.
The city's airport is both a civil and a military airport. Campo Grande International Airport is situated directly west of the city center and is easily reachable by rental car. From the center you take the Av. Afonso Pena which turns into the Av. Dq. de Caxias which leads to the airport.
Campo Grande has good public bus transport, not only within the city limits but also to destinations further out. You can for example travel to Corumbá (6 hours), Bonito, Foz do Iguaçu, Sâo Paulo (13-15 hours), Rio de Janeiro (20 hours) and Porto Alegre (24 hours).
The center is relatively small, but the city as a whole is quite stretched out. It's a modern city with an orderly street pattern and you'll have no trouble finding your way around Campo Grande by rental car. The wide streets also offer enough space for parking, although it may be more difficult to find a free place in the center. There are several parking garages; their locations are signposted.
Campo Grande has a large choice of accommodations ranging from budget hotels to modern, luxurious accommodations and so-called pousadas, luxury hotels usually established in historical buildings. In June, July and August the temperature is pleasant and there are many tourists. We recommend booking your accommodation in advance if you want to visit Campo Grande in those months.
