Location information for Burgas
Introduction
The Bulgarian city of Burgas is an important industrial center of the country, but because of its location on the Black Sea the region has also developed as a tourist center. Bird-lovers will also not be disappointed: there are three large lakes with various species of birds nearby the city. Burgas is also an operating base for trips to the more historical towns of Nesebar and Sozopol.
Population
Burgas' population has increased rapidly. At the end of the nineteenth century a few thousand people lived in the town, but Burgas now has almost 200,000 inhabitants.
Location
Burgas is located on Bulgaria's east coast on the bay of the same name, part of the Black Sea. The city is surrounded by three large lakes (Vaya, Atanasovsko and Mandrensko) where hundreds species of birds live. The Bulgarian capital Sofia lies 390 kilometers west of Burgas.
Economy
Burgas is an industrial center with the oil-industry being the main pillar: the city houses for example the largest oil refinery of Southeast Europe. Trade via the port also plays an important role and tourism has grown significantly in the last years. There are several holiday resorts on the Black Sea.
Airports
Burgas Airport is situated 15 kilometers northeast of the center, near the town of Sarfovo, directly on the Burgas Bay. The airport is easily reachable by rental car via freeway A9. The way to the airport is well signposted.
Public Transport
Burgas has good public transport in the form of (trolley) buses. Buses run regularly, between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. Besides these city buses there are also minibuses covering routes where city buses don't go. You can stop them by raising your hand.
Traffic and Parking
The city center is relatively busy and it may be difficult to find a free parking place for your rental car in the street here. Fortunately there are several guarded parking lots and garages where you can park your rental car. This is also safer than parking in the street.
Hotels
Many new hotels and guesthouses have opened the last few years in Burgas and you will therefore have no trouble finding appropriate accommodation. Most tourists, however, don't stay in the city itself, but in one of the holiday resorts on the Black Sea, between Burgas and Sarfovo, near the airport.
