Larnaca is a harbor city and bathing side on Cyprus. It is one of the most modern cities on the island, but in Larnaca itself many remains of old civilizations can be found. The boulevard along the sea forms the heart of the city. A large salt lake that is situated near Larnaca's airport attracts thousands of flamingos during the winter.
The city has 75,000 inhabitants.
Larnaca lies on the southern coast of Cyprus, in the Greek part of the island, but close to the UN buffer zone which forms the separation with the Turkish part.
Back in the old days Larnaca's port was the most important trade center of Cyprus. The city has lost that position a long time ago, but many private yachts still visit the port. North of the city there is a large oil refinery, but it currently only functions as an oil depot. Maybe that will change when Cyprus starts exploring all oil fields south of the island.
Tourism is very important, surrounding the city there are beautiful sand beaches, but also the remains from the ancient times attract visitors.
Larnaca Airport (the international airport) lies 5 kilometers south of the city. It is the most important airport in Cyprus and handles more than 5 million passengers per year.
There are buses in Larnaca, but the system has not been properly developed. In 2009 the city council announced that they wanted to improve the public transport, with the purchase of new buses and critically reviewing the routes. There are many taxis in Larnaca that should use the meter according to the law, but many drivers refuse that.
There are a few parking areas and garages in Larnaca. You can also park in the street (mostly free on Saturday afternoon and Sunday). At the double yellow lines on the sidewalks it is prohibited to park, at a single yellow line you are only allowed a short stop to pick up or leave passengers.
In the coming years Larnara's center will be renovated, after the renovation a large part of the heart of the city will only be accessible to pedestrians.
From Larnaca there are excellent roads to other destinations in Cyprus. The A2 and the A5 connect with the A1 to Nicosia. The A3 functions mainly as Larnaca's ring road and continues to Ayia Napa, the south eastern point of Cyprus with beautiful sand beaches and a dazzling nightlife.
Larnaca has a large variety of hotels, guest houses, apartments and other accommodations. In general the prices are a little lower compared to the rest of the island. Along the coast you can find more luxurious hotels and resorts. In summer you have to book a room well in advance.
