Of all seaside resorts on the Côte d'Azur, Menton has probably most kept the aristocratic appearance. As of the end of the nineteenth century the European aristocracy built hotels, villas and palaces which still decorate the city. Because Menton is located near the Italian border, the atmosphere is Italian rather than French.
The city has almost 30,000 inhabitants.
Menton is located in the south of France in the far east of the French south coast, between Monaco and the border with Italy. It has a pleasant microclimate because of the mountains in the hinterland; in winter it's often a few degrees warmer in Menton than in other places along the French Mediterranean.
Until the nineties of the previous century fishing was of importance to Menton, but it was wiped out by toxic algae (Caulerpa taxifolia) which affected the local fishing grounds. Menton is known as the Lemon City: many lemons and other citrus fruit are cultivated in the surroundings and traded in Menton. Tourism is of major importance: the city not only draws seaside visitors, but also people who winter here or who have a second home here.
The nearest airport is Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, in a straight line 27 kilometers southwest of Menton. It's easily reachable by rental car. From the center of Menton you first drive north (several routes possible) and then take the freeway A8 to the airport. The distance by road is over 40 kilometers and it's about a 30-minute drive.
There's good public transport in Menton and surroundings, exploited by the company CARF en Bus. Besides city buses there are buses to destinations like Nice and Cannes.
The center, the old city, is mainly a pedestrian zone. There are also many one-way streets, and therefore you often have to make a detour to get to your destination. It's best to park your rental car near the harbor to visit the old center.
Menton has a large choice of accommodations. There are of course many luxury hotels in such an 'aristocratic' place, but you'll also find midrange accommodations. In general, these aren't directly near the sea, but at a few minutes walking from the beach.
