Mulhouse is an industrial city in southern Elzas. The city is best known for the interesting museums, especially the Cité de l’Automobile (also called Musée National de l’Automobile) and the Musée Français du Chemin de Fer (also Cité du train), respectively the largest automobile and train museum in France. You will also find the Electropole (electricity museum), the Musée de l'impression sur étoffes (printed textiles) and a botanical garden combined with a zoo.
The city has over 110,000 inhabitants.
Mulhouse is located in northeastern France, just north of the border with Switzerland and west of the German border. Up until 1798 the city belonged to Switzerland, but in that year the population chose to join France. Two rivers run through Mulhouse, the Doller and the Ill, both tributaries of the Rhine.

The international airport EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is located 22 kilometers southeast of the city. It's an extraordinary airport: it lies in French territory, but is operated by both France and Switzerland.
Mulhouse has excellent public transportation that consists of a dense network of bus and tram lines. The city center can best be explored on foot. You can park your rental car at the university or the Nouveau Bassin and be in the center in six minutes by public transportation.
Around the heart of the city (pedestrian zone) you can park on the street, but for a maximum of three hours. There are also many parking garages around the city.
A rental car is an excellent form of transportation to explore Elzas. There are several routes along the vineyards in this region and ten kilometers northwest of Mulhouse, along the D430, you will find the Écomusée d'Alsace. This is a nice open air museum with traditional buildings from the Elzas. It is located on the site of a closed potash mine. The former miners lead you through the shafts and tunnels.
