Once, Narbonne was a flourishing port city, but because of accretion of land, the city now lies 15 kilometers from the Mediterranean. From the donjon of the Archbishop's Palace (Palais des Archevêques) you have a great view of the city. Narbonne also has an interesting archeological museum and there's an underground grain warehouse from the Roman times. The city's main attraction, however, is the beach on the Mediterranean, Narbonne Plage.
The city has almost 55,000 inhabitants.
Narbonne is located in the Aude department in the Languedoc-Roussillion region in the south of France. Montpellier lies northeast of the city; driving south you get to Perpignan. Narbonne is connected with Carcassonne, the capital of Aude, via the Canal du Midi.
Although Narbonne no longer lies on the coast, there's still some port activity, in Port-la-Nouvelle and Port-la-Robine. Northwest of town there are an installation to enrich uranium and a chemical factory. Tourism is of increasing importance. Visitors are mainly attracted by the beach near Narbonne, but there's also a beautiful nature park (parc naturel) near the city.
The nearest airport is the one of Béziers, Cap d'Agde Airport. It's situated 33 kilometers northeast of Narbonne and is reachable by rental car via freeway A9. Perpignan–Rivesaltes Airport lies 50 kilometers south of Narbonne, and is also reachable via the A9 and then the D117. The airport of the department's capital, Carcassonne Airport, 56 kilometers west of Narbonne on freeway A-61 is an alternative.
Citibus exploits the public bus transport in and around Narbonne. The six city lines have letters (A through F) and the seven lines serving the region have numbers (6 through 12).
In summer it can be busy in town and especially on the road to and from Narbonne Plage. There are plenty of parking facilities near the beach. In the city it's best to park your rental car in one of the parking garages around the center. Many hotels also offer parking facilities.
