Friedrichshafen was seriously bombarded during World War II and rebuilt afterwards. It's therefore a fairly modern city with the promenade along Lake Constance as its main attraction. The Baroque Schlosskirche in the city is worth a visit. It's also the birthplace of the Zeppelin; a museum has been dedicated to this airship.
The city has almost 60,000 inhabitants.
Friedrichshafen is located in the far south of Germany on the north shore of Lake Constance with on the other side of the lake Switzerland and Austria. The city's immediate surroundings are fairly flat, but the hilly Allgäu lies northeast of Friedrichshafen.
Aviation industry used to play an important role in local economy. The Zeppelin was manufactured in Friedrichshafen. Nowadays only small models of this illustrious airship remain, to make tourist trips. Shipping machinery is also manufactured in Friedrichshafen and to a large extent tourism contributes to the city's income. In addition many conferences and exhibitions are held here.
Friedrichshafen Airport is situated almost 5 kilometers northeast of the city center. The airport is easily reachable: from Friedrichshafen's center you take the Paulinenstrasse which turns into the Ravensburgerstrasse which runs along the airport. The exit to the terminal is clearly signposted.
From the central bus station in front of the train station several buses leave for destinations both within and outside Friedrichshafen (for example to Überlingen and Meersburg). Night buses run on weekends. There's also a ferry connection with Romanshorn in Switzerland as well as boat connections with other places around Lake Constance.
During high season (in the summer) the roads in and around Friedrichshafen can be fairly busy. Especially on the B31 (Lindau-Friedrichshafen-Immenstadt-Hagnau-Meersburg-Überlingen) there are often traffic jams. In summer months it's therefore not easy to find a parking place in the street. There are several parking garages in and around the city center where you can park your rental car, for example on the lake near the Graf-Zeppelin-Haus, in the Parkhaus am See and the Parkhaus am Marktkauf Hafenbahnhof. There's a large parking lot east of the harbor.
Friedrichshafen has a good choice of accommodations; most of them are typical southern German family hotels. There's also a city campsite, CAP Rotach Camping, and there's a campsite in the eastern district Fischbach.
