Introduction

Igoumenitsa is a small, picturesque town on the Greek east coast and a popular seaside resort because of the sandy beaches and wooded hills in the surroundings.

Population

The city has approximately 25,000 inhabitants.

Location

Igoumenitsa is located in the far northwest of Greece, near the border with Albania. Opposite the town lies Corfu Island, in the Ionian Sea. The beaches near Igoumenitsa are beautiful, but if you drive 13 kilometers south in your rental car, you'll reach Plataria which has a dazzlingly beautiful beach.

Economy

Nowadays the port (where many ferries arrive and depart) and tourism form the main sources of income. From way back trading of agricultural produce also plays an important role. Transportation is booming, thanks to the connection of Igoumenitsa with the Egnatia Highway, which runs through the north of Greece to Turkey (with exits to Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria).

Airports

The nearest airport on the mainland is Ioánnina National Airport, over 85 car kilometers northeast of Igoumenitsa. The airport can be reached by rental car via the ultramodern freeway A2 (Egnatia Highway). Closer in a straight line is Corfu Airport, but you'll then have to take a ferry from that island to Igoumenitsa.

Public Transport

The Greek bus company KTEL maintains connections with other cities in Greece, including Salonica, Patras, Ioánnina, Arta and Athens.

Traffic and Parking

Igoumenitsa isn't a large city and you'll have no trouble finding your way around in a rental car. There are several parking lots in the city center, for example near the port. Igoumenitsa is a good operating base to discover northern Greece by rental car. Thanks to the Egnatia Highway you quickly reach other destinations like Thessaloníki.

Hotels

The city offers a reasonable choice of accommodations, mainly near the port. There are more options along the beaches south of the city. In order of distance: Sivota Beach, Karavostasi Beach, Gallikos Mollos, Bella Vraka and Lichnos Beach.

If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.
