Kalamáta is the second largest city of the Greek Peloponnese. In contrast with many other cities in this region Kalamáta isn't an old city, but in the surroundings you can find relics dating from classical times. Like in Messene, 25 kilometers northwest of Kalamáta.
The city has over 60,000 inhabitants.
Kalamáta is located in the south of Greece, in between the impressive mountain Taygetos and the Messenian Gulf. The Greek capital Athens is located 240 kilometers to the northeast.
Kalamáta is famous for the olives that are grown. There is even a type of olive named after the city. Excellent olive oil is made from these olives. Via the city harbor figs, dried raisins, wine and ouzo are also exported. Silk products are also a regional specialty. In addition the city is a center for higher education.
Kalamáta International Airport is situated just northwest of the city. In summer months the airport is at its busiest when many charter flights fly to and from European destinations. The airport is easily reachable by rental car via the E55/E65. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.
Kalamáta has good public transportation. Apart from city busses there are bus connections to other destinations in the Peloponnese.
A rental car is an ideal means of transportation to discover Kalamáta and the Peloponnese. In general the roads are in good condition. We do recommend buying a good road map though, because signposting leaves much to be desired.
Kalamáta has a reasonable supply of accommodation. As the city isn't a hugely popular tourist destination (the surrounding beaches are), you will have no problems finding a suitable hotel room most of the time. However, if you want to visit Kalamáta in the summer months we do recommend booking your accommodation in advance.
