Mykonos City, also called Chora, is the capital of the Greek island Mykonos. It's a picturesque town with in the center a crisscross of narrow streets and small squares around the harbor on a beautiful bay. Mykonos is famous for its exuberant nightlife in summer months.
Less than 10,000 people live on the entire island, of which almost half in the capital.
Mykonos City is located on the west side of the island on the Aegean Sea. In a straight line Mykonos lies 150 kilometers from the Greek capital Athens.
Mykonos completely depends on tourism. The island is mainly visited by well-off Europeans, who arrive on the island not only by plane but also by boat. The fact that many visitors have a heavy wallet can be seen from the luxurious yachts in the harbor of Mykonos City.
Mykonos airport is situated four kilometers southeast of the city center. There are direct flights to other islands in the Aegean Sea and Athens. In summer months the airport is busy because of the many charter flights that land and take off. The airport is easily reachable by rental car. From the city center you take the main road to the southeast. The route to the airport is well signposted.
There is no city transportation in Mykonos but busses do run to other parts of the island. From the southern bus station Fabrica there are bus connections with Platys Gialos, Paraga, Paradise, Ornos and Agios Ioannis. From the northern bus station Remezzo, near the old harbor, busses leave for Ano Mera, Elia en Kalafatis. Night busses also run between Mykonos City and Platys Gialos.
A rental car is an ideal means of transportation to discover Mykonos, especially if you want to visit the quieter and more remote beaches on the north side of the island. In general the roads are good. Beware of people and cattle on the road though.
Mykonos is a popular holiday destination and so there is no lack of accommodation: luxury hotels, but also simple guesthouses, studios and apartments. Many people also offer rooms. Prices for accommodation on Mykonos are however higher than on most other Greek islands. In summer months it's extremely busy on Mykonos. We recommend booking your hotel room well in advance in the summer.
