Chiusi is a historical Italian town in southern Tuscany famous for the relics of the ancient Etruscan civilization. It was one of the main Etruscan centers during the fifth and sixth centuries BC. When visiting Chiusi you therefore go way back in time. Underneath the city lies an extensive system of tunnels which was probably used for drainage. The city's museum houses one of the largest collections of Etruscan treasures and art collections.
The town has almost 9,000 inhabitants.
Chiusi is located in Italy in the southern part of Tuscany, in the province of Siena. The province's capital of the same name lies 90 kilometers northwest of Chiusi; Rome lies 165 kilometers south of the city.
Apart from tourism Chiusi's economy mainly revolves around trading agricultural produce from the surroundings, but there's also some industrial activity, mainly production of furniture and building materials.
The nearest airport is Aeroporto Internazionale dell'Umbria Sant’Egidio in Perugia, about 47 kilometers east of Chiusi. The airport can be reached via the SS71 which connects with the freeway to Perugia. You can also drive along the south side of the Colfiorito Lake, via the SS599. The airport of Florence, Peretola Airport, is larger. From this airport you can reach Chiusi by rental car in one hour via the A1 (distance: over 100 kilometers).
Apart from regional buses and trains, Chiusi has no public transport. Regional buses maintain connections with for example Montepulciano, Orvieto, Perugia and Florence. The bus station is situated in front of the train station.
The historical city (storia antica) can only be explored by foot. Outside the center there are some parking places where you can park your rental car.
Chiusi has a reasonable, but not overwhelming, choice of accommodations. There's one four-star hotel. Near the train station you'll find some cheap hotels and guesthouses.
