The Italian city Lecce is also called 'the Florence of the South', because the city houses many Baroque architectural monuments. The city was founded over two thousand years ago by the Greek.
Lecce has almost 100,000 inhabitants.
Lecce is located in the far south of Italy, centrally on the Salentine Peninsula, which you probably know better as 'the heel of the boot'. Brindisi lies 40 kilometers north-northwest of Lecce.
From an economic point of view, 'Lecce stone' is one of the main export products. It's a special type of limestone, relatively soft, thus suitable for sculptures. Lecce is also a center for trade of agricultural produce from the surroundings, mainly olives (of which part is turned into oil) and wine. Lecce also has some ceramic factories.
The nearest airport is Aeroporto del Salento near Brindisi, along the SS16/SS379. It's easily reachable by rental car: first take the SS613 to Brindisi and then follow the directions. The way to the airport is clearly signposted. Expect a travel time of approximately 40 minutes.
Public bus transport in and around Lecce is exploited by SGM. Lecce's city council is trying to make people leave their cars by offering cheap rental bicycles. There are several of these so-called (fully automatic) Bicincittà shelters in town.
Finding a free parking place in Lecce's center may be difficult, but around the center there are three P+R areas (Carlo Pranzo, Via Torre del Parco and Foro Boario) where you can park your car to continue your journey by public transport.
Lecce has a good choice of accommodations. There are luxury hotels in the city center, often housed in attractive mansions, but there are also basic guesthouses and bed & breakfasts. There are campsites and holiday resorts in the city's surroundings and you can rent farms (agritourism). In this case, a rental car comes in handy.
