Location information for Milazzo

Introduction

Milazzo is a town on Sicily where few people spend the night. Most tourists visit the town to travel by ferry to the Aeolian Islands off the coast. If you have to wait for your ferry connection, do visit the castle and stroll through the picturesque surrounding streets.

Population

The town has approximately 35,000 inhabitants.

Location

Milazzo is located on the southern part of a peninsula on the north coast of the Italian island of Sicily, on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The town lies 40 kilometers west of Messina, just north of the freeway to the capital Palermo.

Economy

Milazzo's port is important for the transportation of people and goods to and from the Aeolian Islands, but there are also ferry connections with the island of Ustica (further west) and Naples on mainland Italy. The port plays an important role in the transshipment of goods (including oil). Sicily's coast guard is also headquartered in Milazzo and there are several marinas near the town.

Airports

Although plans exist to expand the local airport, Aeroporto delle Eolie, and make it suitable for international flights, for now, you have to rely on Catania Airport, on the Sicilian east coast. Catania-Fontanarossa Airport is situated over 140 car kilometers south of Milazzo and is reachable by rental car via freeways A20 (to Messina) and A18.

Public Transport

There's no local public transport, but there's a regular bus service between the ferry port and Messina. From Milazzo's port car ferries and faster hydrofoils leave for the Aeolian Islands. Most of them go to Vulcano and Lipari. A few times a week there's a car ferry to Naples.

Traffic and Parking

A rental car is an ideal means of transportation to explore the rest of Sicily. From Milazzo you can easily make trips to Messina, or the Mount Etna Volcano. Bear in mind that the inland roads can be narrow and winding and sometimes unpaved.

Hotels

As Milazzo is mainly a hub for the ferries to the Aeolian Islands, accommodations are limited. There are some basic guesthouses and hotels near the port.
