Reggio Calabria is officially called Reggio di Calabria, but that prefix is often omitted. It is an old city that was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC. In the seventies and eighties of the previous century the Mafia had a firm grip on the town. But in the nineties a counter movement started to eliminate this widespread corruption. The symbol for the town's revival is the promenade along the sea, the Lungomare Falcomatà, named after the mayor who engaged into battle with the Mafia and corruption. The beaches north and south of Reggio (on the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas) are very attractive to tourists. But do not forget to visit the interesting Museum of Greater Greece (Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia). The landscape around the town is breathtaking with the National Park around Mount Aspromonte as its highlight.
The town has a population of about 200,000.
