The seaside town of Rimini is very old: the Romans founded the city in 286 BC to resist the advancing Gaul. Of this rich history there are many remains visible in the city, such as the Arch of Augustus, the Ponte di Tiberio and the amphitheatre. Unfortunately, most visitors don't see any of these sights; they just go to Rimini for the sun, sea, beach and the exuberant nightlife.
Rimini has a population of almost 140,000.
Rimini is located on the east coast of Italy, on the Adriatic Sea, near the mouth of the River Marecchia. In Roman times this river was known as the Ariminum and this explains the origin of the city's name. Southwest of Rimini lies the small European country of San Marino.
Tourism, tourism and tourism. This is what fuels the local economy. But Rimini not only focuses on tourists. Italy's largest convention center (Palacongressi di Rimini) was opened in Rimini in 2010 and Rimini already had a huge Expo Center. Annually, there are many conferences, fairs, and exhibits, including Italy's largest tourist fair. Rimini is in fierce competition with neighboring Riccione, which also has a large convention center (Palazzo dei Congressi).
Rimini's airport is located five kilometers southeast of the city center. Federico Fellini Airport is easily accessible by rental car: the ring road around Rimini (SS16) in southeast direction turns into Via Flaminia, on which the airport terminal is located. The airport is also accessible via the A14 (E55) and the road along the beach (Viale Regina Elena).
The AM bus company (Agenzia Mobilia) operates the city buses in Rimini, which - by Italian standards - run surprisingly regular and on time. There are also lines to nearby towns, such as San Marino. During summer there are night buses (Blue Line), which go to the most popular night spots on the Adriatic coast.
Rimini is a bustling seaside resort, especially in summer. Although traffic is definitely not as chaotic as in Rome, you need to adapt a little to the Italian way of driving. Finding a parking spot on the street can be difficult, but fortunately there is a wide range of parking facilities. In the historic center of town, only cars with a special license are allowed to enter.
Rimini is also called the city of a thousand hotels. This indicates that there is no lack of accommodations. Nevertheless, this is just enough to meet the demand in summer. Add to this that Rimini attracts exhibition and conference delegates (see above, at Economy) and you will understand that it is wise to book your hotel room well in advance.
