Introduction

Santa Teresa Gallura is a popular seaside resort on the northern coast of Sardinia. According to many, these are the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and this coast is therefore called Costa Esmeralda (Emerald Coast) for a reason. The town has an enjoyable center, but outside high season (the summer months) many shops, cafés and restaurants close their doors.

Population

The town has approximately 5,000 permanent inhabitants, but in summer months the number of people staying here can easily double or triple.

Location

Santa Teresa Gallura is located in the far north of Sardinia, on the Strait of Bonifacio. Across the strait lies the French island of Corsica. The town is situated on two bays: the Porto Longone, the natural harbor, and the Rena Bianca, the city's white sandy beach which gets busy in summer months. There are several other beaches nearby Santa Teresa Gallura.

Economy

Tourism is the main source of income and creates a lot of employment. The entire Costa Esmeralda attracts many tourists but Santa Teresa Gallura is one of the pearls in the crown of this coastal area. There's some trade with neighboring Corsica through the harbor, but it doesn't amount to much. Many pleasure yachts moor here though.

Airports

The nearest airport, Costa Smeralda Airport, is situated near Olbia, 65 car kilometers southeast of Santa Teresa Gallura. It's easily reachable by rental car via the SS133bis and the SS125. It's about a one-hour drive.

Public Transport

There's no city transport, but otherwise public bus transport on Sardinia, exploited by the Azienda Regionale Sarda Trasporti (ARST), is good. There are regular connections with all larger cities; smaller villages are often only called at once a day. The smaller villages can only be reached by rental car.

Traffic and Parking

The streets in Santa Teresa Gallura's old center are narrow and sometimes inaccessible for cars. Normally it's already not easy to find a parking place around the center, but it's worse in summer months. It's best to park at your hotel and use your rental car for trips across the island. Although Sardinia has no freeways, the highways are excellent. The secondary roads are often narrow and winding and sometimes unpaved. Drive carefully and slowly here.

Hotels

The Costa Esmeralda is a popular holiday area, not only for people from outside Italy, but also for Italians. Italian travel agents often rent entire hotels to accommodate their guests. Especially in summer months there are barely any hotel rooms available in Santa Teresa Gallura and the rest of the Costa Esmeralda. If you want to visit Sardinia in those months, we advise booking your accommodation well in advance, also if you want to stay at a campsite in this coastal area. Inland you can generally find free rooms or places on campsites.
