Luqa is a town on the island of Malta, which was almost completely destroyed during World War II. Two churches from the fifteenth century were preserved. Apart from these old churches the annual festival in honor of patron saint St. Andrews is one of the tourist highlights. It's celebrated on the first Sunday in July.
The town has over 6,000 inhabitants.
Luqa is centrally located in the hills of southeastern Malta.
Luqa's economy is closely linked to the presence of the airport. Tourism is of major importance: Malta is visited by more than a million people annually. The international stream of tourists arrives on Malta mainly by plane which creates a lot of employment for the town's inhabitants.
Malta airport is situated directly south of Luqa. The airport is easily reachable by rental car via the Vjal L Avjazzjoni (the road to Marsa). From here the way to the airport is clearly signposted. Every year, during the last weekend of September, a spectacular military airplane show is held at this airport.
Malta has good public bus transportation. It's even one of the island's tourist attractions, because the service is carried out with almost antique British busses. Some local elements have however been added, such as innumerable saint's images. Most busses leave from the main bus station in the capital Valletta. Often you have to return to Valletta first to reach another destination on Malta.
A rental car is an ideal means of transportation to explore Malta. In general the road conditions are good. Parking in the old city centers however is often tightly regulated. It's prohibited to park alongside a continuous double yellow line. Next to a single yellow line it's prohibited to park at certain times (usually indicated on signs); you are allowed to briefly stop. In the so-called 'Time Parking Zones' you are only allowed to park a limited time, in most cases no more than one hour.
Being a typical tourist island there is no shortage of hotels and accommodation on Malta. Ranging from a cheap dormitory for backpackers to five star hotels. In the last years several more expensive hotels have been built. Tourists who can afford such a hotel room bring in more cash argues Malta. In summer months it's recommended to book your room well in advance.
