Roosendaal is a city in the province of Noord-Brabant that is know above all for its international train station. Not many people outside Roosendaal know that it has a cosy historical centre with many shops. The city is the centre of West-Brabant, with many attractive forms of recreation.
Roosendaal has about 75,000 inhabitants.
Roosendaal is located in the west of the province of Noord-Brabant near the Belgian border, about halfway between Rotterdam and Antwerp. To the east or Roosendaal lies Bergen op Zoom. The city is surrounded by extensive forests and nature areas like the Wouwse Plantade, Visdonk and the Rucphense Heide.
Due to its location between Rotterdam and Antwerp and its international train station, transport is heavily represented in Roosendaal. In addition, many people work in (semi-)government jobs and in healthcare. Roosendaal is traditionally also known as a shopping city with a regional function. There are also many bars and restaurants that, especially during the weekend, attract people from a wide area surrounding Roosendaal.
The nearest airport is Rotterdam Airport (about 65 km). For flights to Southern-European holiday destinations, Eindhoven Airport (about 85 km) offers a good alternative. The national airport Amsterdam Schiphol Airport can be reached in about 90 minutes (130 km). Belgium's national airport (Zaventem) is located 95 km to the south of Roosendaal.
Roosendaal has an international train station. It is located on the line between Amsterdam and Paris. The train stops in Roosendaal to allow people to switch trains bound for Zeeland and Limburg.
Roosendaal has five city bus lines. So-called neighbourhood buses connect to the surrounding villages of Heerle, Moerstraten, Nispen, Wouw and Wouwse Plantage. At bus station De Roselaar there are also many regional buses, for instance to Bergen op Zoom and Breda. The departure and arrival times of the buses are synchronised to the train time tables.
Roosendaal is located on the A58 from Eindhoven to Vlissingen, and on the A17, a connection road between the A16 (Rotterdam-Belgian border) and the A58.
In the shopping centre, the streets are car free. In the surrounding roads parking spaces are reserved for the residents, the so-called permit holders zone. At a somewhat greater distance, you can park for 4 hours at the most. It is better to park your car in the large parking areas in the centre (Van Dregtplein, Kloosterstraat, Kadeplein) or in one of the three car parks (Roselaar, Biggelaar and Mill Hill). Via dynamic signs you are guided to a garage with available parking spaces. On Friday nights and Saturdays you can also use the area behind the Stadskantoor.
Near the railway station there are two P+R areas, only the area behind the Stationsstraat is publicly accessible, the area on the Spoorstraat is reserved for permit holders.
Roosendaal has five hotels, which is enough for a city of its size. Generally speaking, there is no need to book in advance, except during events (for instance carnival). In the surrounding areas there are also many campsites.
