Poznań is a historical city; according to many the birthplace of Poland as a nation. It was also the country's first capital. The market square surrounded by Baroque and Renaissance houses forms the center. Here you'll also find the City Hall, where every day at noon two tin goats appear from the clock tower to clash their horns twelve times. The story behind it? Find out for yourself in Poznań!
The city has approximately 560,000 inhabitants.
Poznań is located in the west of Poland, on the Warta River which turns west north of the city to discharge into the Oder. Poznań's old cathedral is situated on Ostrów Tumski, an island in the Warta.
The city has been an important trade center since the Middle Ages. This is reflected by the more than 30 large fairs which are held annually. Since the fall of communism, many Western companies have invested in Poznań, mainly in the food, furniture and automotive industries. Thanks to the good rail and road connections, the city is also a logistical center. Poznań is the second most thriving city in the country, after the capital Warsaw.
Poznań Airport (in Polish: Port Lotniczy Poznań-Ławica), is situated 10 kilometers west of the center. It's easily reachable by rental car via the Jana Henryka Dąbrowskiego. The way to the airport is clearly signposted.
Poznań has good public transport, consisting of two types of streetcars (regular and express streetcars) and buses. The regular streetcars are the best choice for transportation in and around the center, while the express streetcars and buses run to the suburbs. There are also good bus and train connections with other Polish cities, including Wroclaw and Warsaw. There are international train connections with Berlin and Moscow.
Poznań's old center is extremely compact and partially a pedestrian zone. There are some parking lots and garages around the center where you can park your rental car. For security reasons this is also preferred to parking in the street. It's also often not well indicated in the street if you have to pay, and if so, how much and where. The parking police do know and they give out tickets quickly.
Poznań has an abundance of accommodations in all categories. It may still be difficult to find a hotel room to your taste as the city hosts many fairs and conferences annually. During larger fairs almost all hotels are booked up. In this case the office of Glob-Tour in the central hall of the train station can help finding a basic room in a bed & breakfast or guesthouse.
