Wrocław has been – actually, just like the rest of Poland – toyed around with by other countries on many occasions. The city has been under Polish, Bohemian, Austrian, Prussian and German regimes, before it became Polish again after World War II. In that war, much of the city was destroyed, but the residents rebuilt the center with much resilience. Wrocław is often compared to the Czech capital Prague, but it is smaller and significantly less touristy.
The city has a population of 650,000, this makes it Poland's fourth city.
Wrocław is located in the historical region of Silesia in southwest Poland, on the River Oder.
Traditionally, industry in Wrocław consisted mainly of the production of railroad cars and electronics. Since the fall of communism, the city tries to attract foreign investors. This has resulted in the establishment of several high-tech companies, such as a large factory of electronics giant LG. Furthermore, the city is an important financial center with the headquarters of several major Polish banks.
Wrocław's airport is located ten kilometers southwest of the city. Copernicus Airport Wrocław is easily accessible by rental car: the airport is on the ul. Graniczka, accessible from the inner ring road around Wrocław (E261) or highway A8, which runs west of the city.
The city has excellent public transport, which consists of buses and trams. There are 60 bus routes and 25 tram lines. Due to road works (see Traffic) lines may be altered temporarily.
During communism, many roads in Poland have not or hardly had any maintenance. Although Wrocław has done much already to improve infrastructure, much work remains to be done. This means that you will encounter many road blocks where the road is under construction. Furthermore, the road signage does not excel in clarity and car traffic is banned or limited in parts of the old town. In the center you have to pay if you want to park your car on the street; you can buy a ticket from a parking meter or a kiosk.
More and more people discover Wrocław's charms and therefore the number of accommodations has increased substantially in recent years. The city has many simple, but good and cheap guesthouses, but also middle class accommodations and luxury hotels. You will generally not have any trouble in finding a suitable room. Nevertheless, we recommend booking your room in advance if you're visiting Wrocław in summer. The most popular hotels are located in the immediate vicinity of the historic market square Rynek.
