It is believed that the name of the Swedish Växjö is constructed from the Swedish words for 'road' (‘väg’) and 'lake' (sjö) as in winter farmers from the surroundings used to cross the frozen lake to get quicker to the market in town, which later became the city. The ruins of Kronoberg Castle, north of town, are one of the main attractions of Växjö.
The city has approximately 70,000 inhabitants.
Växjö is located in the Småland region in the south of Sweden. The city is more or less surrounded by lakes. Besides the Växjö Lake near the center, there are the Helgasjön and Toftasjön Lakes north of town, and the Norra Bergundasjön, Södra Bergundasjön and Trummen Lakes southwest and south of the center.
Växjö is a university city: the Linnaeus University has about 15,000 students and thousands of others study at other institutes for higher education. Thanks to the woody surroundings, wood industry plays an important role in local economy which is also reflected by the local furniture industry. The residue of the wood industry is incinerated in the power plant; the heated cooling-water is used for district heating and the ashes go back to the forest as additional nutriments. Energy saving is important to Växjö; the city is among the most energy-conserving cities in Europe. The city originated around a commercial market and that regional commercial activity is still present.
The city's airport is called Småland Airport, but also Växjö Airport. It's situated 10 car kilometers northwest of the center and is easily reachable by rental car. From the city center you first take the Storgatan and then a bit of freeway, the Jönköpingsvägen and the Nylandavägen to the airport. The way to the airport is clearly signposted.
The train station is the city's public transportation hub. Trains and buses leave here for other places in Småland and the rest of Sweden, including Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Växjö has excellent public city transport. The city buses also have their central station near the train station. In summer, a bus runs to Kronoberg Castle.
Växjö isn't a large city and traffic isn't that busy. You'll have no problem finding your way around in a rental car. Parking rates are pretty steep though; Växjö wants to keep up its reputation of 'green city' and keep cars out of the center whenever possible. A rental car is therefore mainly useful to make trips in the surroundings.
Växjö has a reasonable choice of accommodations ranging from basic guesthouses to midrange hotels. If you want to discover the real Sweden you can stay at a hotel on one of the dozens of lakes in the city's surroundings. Nearby Växjö there are hotels along the Tofta Lake, but if you drive a bit further in your rental car, you'll come across splendid hotels, situated on fairy-tale lakes.
