Location information for Lucerne
Introduction
Lucerne is a picturesque city on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. The old part of the city with its narrow streets is partially surrounded by the Museggmauer, a city wall from the fourteenth century. The covered Chapel Bridge over the Reuss River is well-known. Lucerne is a perfect operating base for trips through the mountains or on the lake, for example to Altdorf on the south side where William Tell shot an apple of the head of his son with a crossbow.
Population
The city has almost 80,000 inhabitants making it the largest city in the center of Switzerland.
Location
Lucerne is located in the heart of Switzerland, where the Reuss River discharges into the irregularly shaped Lake Lucerne. The city is surrounded by mountains, including Mount Pilatus (2129 meters), Mount Rigi (1727 meters) and Mount Bürgenstock (1128 meters).
Economy
Public services, healthcare and education are very present in Lucerne. Tourism is also an important source of income; annually, the city is visited by over a million people. There's also some metallurgical industry and Lucerne is the trade center for agricultural produce from the fertile surroundings. The Canton of Lucerne has significantly reduced taxes for companies in order to draw more investors.
Airports
The nearest airport is Zurich Airport, over 60 kilometers north of Lucerne. It's easily reachable by rental car via the A14 and the A4. The way to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
Verkehrsbetriebe Luzern (VBL) looks after public city transport with buses and trolley buses. Bus connections with other places in Switzerland are exploited by private companies. There are also excellent train connections with for example Bern, Zurich and Basel.
Traffic and Parking
Lucerne's infrastructure is excellent; you'll have no trouble finding your way around by rental car. There are over ten parking garages in and around the city center. An electronic system guides you to the nearest parking garage with availability. Rates are rather high though.
Hotels
Lucerne draws many tourists and therefore has a large choice of accommodations in all price ranges. Hotels book up quickly both in winter and in summer months so it's best to book well in advance. If you can't find a suitable room in the city, there are several accommodations nearby the city, along Lake Lucerne.
