The Thai Krabi is situated a few kilometers from the beach and the main reason for tourists to visit the city is therefore to continue their journey to one of the seaside resorts on the beach: Had Yao, Ao Nang and Rai Leh.
The city has almost 20,000 inhabitants.
Krabi is located on the west coast in the south of Thailand, along a river of the same name which discharges into the Phangnga Bay. The city lies almost 950 kilometers south of the Thai capital Bangkok. Ko Phi-Phi and Ko Phuket lie off the coast, but the latter holiday island takes a while to reach by rental car: 180 kilometers by road.
Tourism is the main source of income. There are several beaches nearby, but also wonderful nature parks including maritime reserves near Ko Lanta and Ko Phi-Phi and the inland national parks Khao Phanom Bencha and Than Bokkhorani.
The city's airport, Krabi International Airport, is situated 15 kilometers east of the center. It's easily reachable by rental car: from the center you first take Thanon Utarakit (road number 411) north to reach the airport via freeway 4 (Phetkasem Road). The exit to Krabi Airport is clearly signposted.
Like in the rest of Thailand, local public transport mainly consists of songthaews (covered pick-ups with benches on both sides). They run set routes and you can get on and off anywhere along the route. From the central bus station there are several (inter) regional connections with other places in Thailand, including Bangkok.
Although Krabi can get fairly busy, especially in winter months, you'll have no problem driving around by rental car. In general, finding a free parking place isn't a problem either. There are parking garages and/or lots near the large shopping centers. There are also sufficient parking facilities near the beaches.
The city itself offers some accommodations, but most hotels and holiday resorts are located directly on the beaches near Had Yao, Ao Nang and Rai Leh. We advise booking your accommodation well in advance if you want to visit Krabi or surroundings during winter months (November through February).
