Already in previous centuries Kayseri was an important commercial city which which is reflected by the beautiful buildings in the historical center. The city is the birthplace of Mimar Sinan who was the most important architect of the Ottoman Empire (he built for example the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul) in the sixteenth century.
The city has approximately 1 million inhabitants.
Kayseri is centrally located in Turkey, in Central Anatolia. The famous and impressive tuff landscape of Cappadocia lies 70 kilometers west of Kayseri, which makes the city a popular hub for tourists. South of the city lies the extinct volcano Mount Erciyes (3916 meters), a popular winter sports area.
Since the turn of the century, the business spirit has returned to Kayseri. This is due to the improved infrastructure and the return of inhabitants who had gone elsewhere to look for work because of the bad economic situation before the turn of the century. The growth was so prompt that Kayseri submitted a request to be mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records 'for most new companies started in one day' (139). About 4000 companies in Kayseri are involved in the production of furniture. There's also textile industry and from the old days trading of agricultural produce from the fertile surroundings. Kayseri is also the home base of the manufacturer of food products Ülker.
Kayseri Airport is called Erkilet International Airport and is situated 8 kilometers north of the city center. It can be reached from the center by rental car via the Erkilet Boulevard.
Kayseri has very efficient public bus transport. There's also a modern streetcar line, which became operational in 2009. Like in other Turkish cities, public transport also includes so-called dolmuş, minibuses which run a set route and where you can get on or off anywhere. It's a cheap way to get around.
The bus station for (inter) regional buses is situated 6 kilometers northwest of the city center.
Kayseri is a modern city with an excellent infrastructure and you'll therefore have no trouble finding your way around. There are also several parking garages and lots to park your rental car.
