Buffalo has had a hard time because of the industry moving out of town. The last few years Buffalo is brought to life again: the quays along the water have been transformed into an attractive entertainment and residential area and instead of being an industrial center, Buffalo is now a center of high-quality healthcare and higher education. Architecture is one of Buffalo's main attractions: there are buildings from various periods, for example in the historical district of Allentown. The city is also a perfect operating base to visit the famous Niagara Falls, north of town.
Buffalo has over 300,000 inhabitants which makes it the largest city in the state of New York after New York City. Many more people live in the Buffalo metropolitan area: about 1.1 million.
Buffalo is located in the state of New York in the United States on the east side of Lake Erie and opposite Fort Erie, situated in Canada. The Niagara River runs from Buffalo to the north, across the Niagara Falls to dispatch into Lake Ontario.
Buffalo used to be at a junction of traffic, including railroads. Shipping across the Great Lakes (and through the Erie Canal) used to be important for the city. It created a lot of heavy industry, of which most has disappeared. Buffalo's economy now depends mainly on healthcare, higher education and (financial) services.
Buffalo Niagara International Airport is situated in the city's eastern suburbs, 15 kilometers northeast of the center. From the center, the airport is easily reachable by rental car via the Kensington Expressway (NY-33). From other parts of the state of New York the airport can be reached via the New York State Thruway, which ends at the airport.
The city has good public bus transport. There's also a subway line from the city center to the campus of the University of Buffalo. In the center the subway runs aboveground; just after Theater Station it goes underground. In the center you don't have to pay for the subway. There's also a direct bus connection with Niagara Falls: line 40 runs from the Buffalo Transportation Center to this famous attraction.
Like many other American cities Buffalo has a regular street pattern and many freeways cross the city, including the aforementioned Kensington Expressway to the airport. Finding a free parking place in the street isn't very difficult, but it's better to park your rental car in one of the parking garages in the center. The locations are signposted.
Buffalo offers a good range of accommodations. Especially the budget category is well represented, but there are also sufficient midrange hotels and some luxurious accommodations. Most hotels are located in the city center, close to the city's main attractions.
