Jackson in the American state of Wyoming is the gateway to two of the best-known national parks of the United States: Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Jackson is often, mistakenly, called Jackson Hole, but that's the name of the valley in which it lies. The confusion is probably caused by the name of the airport which is called after the valley.
The town has about 10,000 inhabitants.
Jackson is located in Jackson Hole, a valley in the Rocky Mountains. The town lies in the western part of the American state of Wyoming in the northwest of the United States. The low-lying valley is surrounded by mountains. The town is situated near the southern entrance of Grand Teton National Park; Yellowstone lies more to the northwest.
The economy is practically solely based on tourism. In winter months Jackson is a popular ski resort; in summer months it's the operating base for hikes through Grand Teton and Yellowstone.
Jackson Hole Airport is situated 15 kilometers north of the center, just within the borders of Grand Teton National Park. By rental car the airport can be reached from Jackson's center via the North Cache Street which turns into the highway (with no less than three road numbers: 1991 N/26 E/89 N) to the airport.
The town has good public bus transport including bus connections to other places in the Jackson Hole valley, and to the Star Valley and the Teton Valley in the state of Idaho.
You'll have no trouble finding your way around Jackson by rental car. The town is geared towards tourists and all places of interest are clearly signposted. Finding a parking place is no problem either. Jackson is relatively isolated; the nearest large city, Salt Lake City, lies south of Jackson at about five hours by car.
Jackson has an enormous choice of hotels and guesthouses. There are also accommodations in the national parks. Jackson is busiest in winter and in summer. In spring and autumn the town can be deserted: there are few tourists and many hotels and restaurants close down.
