Lihue is the main town on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. It's not only the island's transportation center; the town has an interesting museum (Kauai Museum) and the Menehune fishponds are popular among tourists.
The town, or should we say village, has less than 6000 inhabitants. Although Lihue is the main place on Kauai, it's not the largest. That would be Kapa'a on the Coconut Coast, 10 kilometers north of Lihue.
Lihue is located on the southeast coast of Kauai, which is by size the fourth island of Hawaii, one of the United States in the Pacific Ocean.
Tourism is by far the main source of income for Lihue and the entire island, which is visited by almost one and a half million tourists annually. Most tourists (about 80%) are American. Lihue is a commercial center with branches of large department stores and supermarkets like Macy's, Sears, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Costco. The island used to have large sugar plantations, but only the one of the Gay and Robinson families remains. This plantation wants to focus on the production of the biofuel ethanol.
Lihue Airport is situated just east of Lihue, at only 3 kilometers from the center. It's easily reachable by rental car: from the center you take Ahukini Road which leads directly to the airport. Kapule Highway (HI-51) also runs along Kauai Airport.
Kauai has good public transport, although you will not be able to reach remote attractions by public bus. The bus only runs between populated areas like Lihue and Kapa'a and the popular beaches.
If you don't just want to lie on the beach, a rental car is an ideal means of transportation. More than that, it's the only way to visit remote places of interest and discover the quiet spots of Kauai. The main road along the coast can be fairly busy, but the island has sufficient parking facilities.
Kauai is a holiday island and therefore has a huge choice of accommodations. When choosing a hotel or holiday resort you need to bear in mind that the green northern part of the island receives a lot more rain than the south. Also consider which attractions you want to visit. Although the island isn't big, the main roads aren't that wide and traffic is quite busy. And you don't want to spend half your holidays in your car, do you?
