As for places of interest, the Thai city of Udon Thani doesn't have much to offer. There are, however, many beautiful sites and attractions in the surroundings making the city an excellent operating base for day trips. And at night? Yes, there are many cafés, bars and restaurants, so you don't have to get bored. Attention: don't confuse this city with Ubon Ratchathani which lies much further to the southwest.
The city has approximately 230,000 inhabitants.
Udon Thani is located in the north of Isaan, the northeastern region of Thailand. The city lies just south of the border with Laos and about 560 kilometers north of the Thai capital Bangkok. East of Udon Thani, near Ban Chiang, archeological excavations have been carried out, whereby objects from the Bronze Age have been found.
The city lies in the middle of a fertile agricultural area and trading and processing of agricultural produce therefore form the backbone of local economy. Until 1976 there was an American army base (supporting the war in Vietnam). After it disappeared, tourism to Udon Thani was stimulated. Many westerners have also permanently settled here. Nearby the city there are potash mines; potash is the main ingredient for fertilizer.
Udon Thani International Airport lies in the city's southern suburbs. The addition of 'international' only refers to flights to Luang Prabang in Laos. Other than that there are only domestic flights to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. The airport is easily reachable by rental car, for example via the city's beltway.
Like in most other Thai cities, the so-called songthaews are the most popular means of public transportation. These are pick-ups with on both sides benches. They run set routes, use fixed rates, and if you want to get off, you ring a bell. There are also tuk-tuks (tricycles with a type of coach) but you'll need to negotiate the price. There are also bus connections with Bangkok, Khon Kaen and Nong Khai (on the border with Laos).
The old main road (road number 2) has been diverted around the city and is now part of the beltway around Udon Thani. The old road 2 is, however, still the city's main road and an easy reference point. It isn't difficult to find your way around or to find a parking place, for example near the large shopping centers. You can, however, also easily find a parking place in the street. You will then often have to pay a boy or man a small amount to watch your car. Agree with this; without exception they are poor people who are trying to make a penny (or rather: a few baht).
Udon Thani has a good choice of accommodations. There are basic guesthouses but also luxurious accommodations. For longer stays you can rent apartments. Also a luxury: renting a private villa with swimming pool. Cheap hotels are mainly concentrated near the bus and train stations and around Central Plaza.
