Trondheim is the oldest city in Norway, founded in 997 by Viking King Olav Tryggvason. Moreover, at that time it wasn't very important, because the Viking age was already ending. In the Middle Ages Trondheim was the most important trade city of Scandinavia and a leading religious center. The Dom (the only cathedral in Norway) reminds of that time. Not only the historic town itself, but also the rugged terrain and fjord coast make Trondheim a popular destination for a city break.
The city has a population of officially 170,000. This does not include the approximately 20,000 students.
Trondheim is centrally located in Norway, where the Nidelva River flows into the Trondheim Fjord. Because of this location, the city is well protected from sea breezes. Furthermore, winters are (given the northern location) relatively mild.
Trondheim lost its position as an important port long ago. Nowadays high-tech, research and development are the most important industries for the local economy. The city has a prominent university of engineering and natural sciences and there are some well-established research institutes. Furthermore, the Norwegian air force has its training center there.
The airport of Trondheim is located 35 kilometers north of the city center. Trondheim Airport Værnes is easily accessible by rental car via highway E6. The way to the airport is clearly signposted.
Trondheim has excellent public buses. During the day they run very frequently. Furthermore, on weekends there is a night service; these buses leave from Olav Tryggvasons Street, near the entertainment district. There is a tram line (Gråkallbanen) from St. Olavs street to the recreational area Lian in the forests southwest of Trondheim.
Except for the historical center, you can easily visit Trondheim's sights by rental car. You can park in the streets in the center, but usually it's cheaper to park in a parking garage. Signs indicate where there are free parking spaces. There are eight municipal garages, but the parking service collaborates with some hotels, this means that you can also park your rental car in some hotel parking garages.
Trondheim has a good range of accommodations in all categories. Popular hotels are located near Erkebispegården. In summer it is advisable to book your hotel room in advance. Norwegians love the outdoors and therefore it is allowed to camp in the wild anywhere, as long as you are at least 300 meters away from any buildings. Furthermore, in summer there are some official campsites near Trondheim.
